We talk a lot about the history of Punch-Out! The Gaming Historian is the go-to source for this. This video is fantastic. Check it out if you haven’t.
2:35 Jeff Argues Knock Out Kings is a better boxing game than Punch Out. Sure, Jeff.
8:40 Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns is the greatest three rounds of boxing on YouTube, according to Jeff.
17:55 - Coachkrab’s Mike Tyson Punch-Out Tutorial is probably the best for newbies.
26:00 - I may have oversold this, but Mike Tyson’s punch to Chris Jericho.
30:15 - Jeff makes a Nintendo commercial.
33:23 - “Title Fight” was another arcade boxer with a different UI.
34:13 - Chris Knowles noticed a funny Punch-Out “joke” Jeff made in our last episode. It was unintentional, and I missed it too.
36:25 - Yukio Kaneoka has a Nintendo Fan Page but lacks a Wikipedia page, which seems criminal!
41:36 - Warrior is a “perfect film,” according to Jeff, and better than any UFC film has any right being.
46:25 - Great video game song medley from Fredde Gredde, with an unfortunate reference to a bad set of Punch-Out lyrics. Also, I was incorrect. He’s returned since I last checked and now has a great Zelda medley!
50:17 - Boxers walk without their heels hitting the ground. Ask another framed Massachusetts alumn, Matt Damon!
56:25 - Jeff and his brother had a tough contest to beat the game.
59:10 - Summoning Salt is the best Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out speed runner around, and he also made a fantastic documentary on the prolific speed runner Matt Turk and how it took a village to beat his records.
1:04:47 - I bring up Josh Waitzkin, a former chess prodigy and Push Hands world champion. He sounds just like Jeff in regards to feints in his book.
1:12:17 - We don’t go in-depth, but “The Console Wars” is a great book and documentary series by Blake J. Harris on the Nintendo/Sega competition in the 90s.
1:15:40 - We briefly bring up the Captain N TV show. I observe the difference in King Hippo avatars. I’ll leave this here:
1:18:20 - Excellent episode from Toy Galaxy on Captain N, and why it seemed slightly off.
1:25:10 - Doc Louis has advice for Little Mac he disperses throughout Punch-Out. Jeff runs down how good it is.
1:27:55 - We break kayfabe to reveal, no, Chet Wild doesn’t think he could take Jeff in a boxing match. We compare the difference in skill to the Brian Scalabrine Challenge.
